The Herøyspiel Kongens Ring (The King's Ring) is a Viking musical that has been staged every year on the first weekend in July since 1992 in the western Norwegian island community of Herøy . The venue is the Herøy amfi open-air theater on the island of Herøya . The open-air stage, specially built for the Herøyspiele, has around 1200 seats on halved tree trunks in a largely natural environment. Around 200 people work in supporting roles, as extras, in the choir and orchestra, as well as in the organization of the Herøyspelet. Only the main roles are cast by professional actors.

The plot

The Viking musical Kongens Ring describes the dramatic encounter between the Viking Møre-Karl and King Olav Haraldsson in 1027 on the island of Herøya.

Unn the beautiful, daughter of Ragnar Herøyhäuptling and Inga, Ingolv Ynda is promised. Unn also has warm feelings for the Viking Møre-Karl, who is of the rather windy kind and who has recently been busy with the devastation and pillage of the Møre coast.

There is a conflict between Møre-Karl and Ingolv Ynda, which ends in a duel ( Holmgang ) of the rivals. At exactly this point in time, King Olav Haraldsson appears in Herøy with his ships and soldiers and prevents the duel. In order to prevent a conflict between his soldiers and the men of Møre-Karl, the king opens the thing and proclaims the peace of the thing .

The rampant Viking chief must enter the king's service. Because King Olav had difficulties collecting taxes from the Faroe Islands and the tax collector was murdered, he sent Karl to the Faroe Islands as the new tax collector. Møre-Karl and his squire Battolf go on the risky Viking journey west.

The plot of the game is based on Chapter 142 of Snorri Sturluson's Heimskringla , the saga about Olav the Saint. The historical figure of Møre-Karl, Karl Mørske or Karl von Møre is also mentioned in the Faroese saga .
