Ælfwald II. (Sherborne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ælfwald II. (Also Alfwold or Ælfwold ; † 1058 ) was Bishop of Sherborne .

Initially a monk of Winchester, he was ordained Bishop of Sherborne in 1045 as the successor to his own brother Brithwyn (or Brihtwine) . William of Malmesbury reported that his modesty contrasted with the pomp that was otherwise customary at the time.

He showed great devotion to his old Winchester patron, St. Swithun. He was, in a sense, the last bishop of Sherborne. After his death, the Diocese of Sherborne was merged with the Diocese of Ramsbury. In 1170, Ramsbury then became part of the Salisbury diocese.
