Hermann (bishop)

Hermann (also Herman ; † February 20, 1078 ) was Bishop of Ramsbury and Sherborne .

He was born and raised in Lorraine, was the priest of the future Queen Edith and was ordained bishop in 1045. In the same year he took office in Ramsbury.

Through his acquaintance with Edith, he later became a confidante of Edward the Confessor , King of England. In 1050 he was together with Bishop Ealdred von Worchester for Pope Leo IX. convened synod sent to Rome.

In 1058 he took over the bishopric of Sherborne. Even after William ascended the English throne in 1066, he was allowed to keep his office.

He died on February 20, 1078. The merger of Ramsbury and Sherborne continued after his death. The common bishopric was later moved to Salisbury.
