- January 7th : The military leader Nikephoros Botaneiates revolted against the Byzantine Emperor Michael VII and invaded Constantinople three months later . Michael VII abdicates in favor of his brother, who cannot prevail against the rebels, and goes to a monastery. Nikephorus III. Botaneiates is proclaimed Emperor of the Byzantine Empire .
