Werner von Steußlingen (also Wernher, Wezelin, Wezelo, Werinher, Wessilo, Wezel ; * around 1010, probably in Altsteusslingen ; † slain in Thuringia after August 7, 1078) was Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1063 to 1078 .

Life

He came from the Swabian noble family of the noble free von Steusslingen and was the son of Walter von Steusslingen (* around 980) and his wife Eggela . In Magdeburg Cathedral there is a grave slab that reads: Nonas februarii obiit Eggela mater sct Annonis coloniensis archiepiscopi (Eggela, the mother of St. Anno, Archbishop of Cologne, died on February 5th). A year of death is not noted. The writing and the fact that there is talk of St. Anno (canonization 1183) allow the conclusion that the Eggela grave slab could only be made after 1183. --- Anno II., Archbishop of Cologne, and Werner, Archbishop of Magdeburg, were brothers.

From 1063/1064 he had the monastery of Our Dear Women rebuilt and began building the church. He supported Bishop Burchard II of Halberstadt , with whom he was related, in founding the Huysburg by sending the monk Thizelin from the Berge monastery to Huysburg. In 1064 he received the (now) unknown village of Subitzi from Empress Agnes and eleven Hufen Land in Zehling and Osmarsleben in January 1071 from Catorissess Judith in Quedlinburg.

In 1077 Werner consecrated the high altar of Magdeburg Cathedral.

In the investiture controversy he was an opponent of Heinrich IV. And consecrated the king Rudolf von Rheinfelden to the king. But when it came to battle between this and Heinrich IV, who had returned from Italy, on the river Streu near Mellrichstadt in Würzburg on August 7, 1078 , Werner fled with the Bishop of Merseburg and other prelates . While on the run he was killed by a farmer in Thuringia. His body was transferred to Magdeburg and buried in the monastery “Our Lady”.
