Life

Engelhard was first canon in Würzburg and Goslar. Then he became court chaplain of Heinrich III. and in 1051 appointed Archbishop of Magdeburg by him. In the same year he attended the council in Mainz, where Pope Leo IX. the simony and priestly marriage forbade. After Engelhard had accompanied Burchard I of Halberstadt in the hour of his death, he and Bishop Burchard II of Halberstadt inaugurated the two superius quidam altars in the first chapel on the Huysburg in 1058 . Archbishop Engelhard's in honor of the Mother of God Maria BMV and a crypt-altar inferius autem altare in crypt , which was dedicated by Bishop Burchard I to Saints Maria Magdalena and Gregory.

For the Codex Wittekindeus, the archbishop donated a valuable binding made of precious metal, precious stones and four ivory tablets from the 10th century. When the cover was redesigned in the 19th century, only the four ivory panels were used.

In 1060, Agnes, the mother of Heinrich IV, gave the goods of the late Magdeburg canon Liudger (Luderus), which had fallen to the crown, on June 21. These included Quenstedt, Sibigerode, Hartwigerode, Hermerode, Willerode, Gernrode, Hain, Ritterode, Braunrode, Poplitz , Bründel, Winningen, Börnike, Braunschwede, Hillenschwede, as well as the now unknown Smalenpike. In 1063, lands in Dodeleben, Erxleben, Sohlen and the (today) unknown village of Lazili followed from the estate of another canon.

In the same year he witnessed the dispute between Bishop Hezilo of Hildesheim and the abbot of Fulda Widerad. Engelhard himself had left the reputation of a staid and pious man, who is only said to have been too devoted to the fair sex. He died of Schlagfluss and was buried like his predecessor in Magdeburg Cathedral.
