Humfried
Humfried (also Hunfried, Manfried, Memfried ; † February 28, 1051 in Vatterode ) was Archbishop of Magdeburg from 1023 to 1051 .
Life
Humfried was first a monk, then provost of the cathedral in Würzburg and chaplain at the imperial court. He was elected Archbishop of Magdeburg in 1023 at the urging of Heinrich II . In March 1024 he was dressed in the archbishop's pallium . At the side of Konrad II you can find him in 1026 in Regensburg , 1027 in Rome and in the latter year he was also at the Synod of Frankfurt , where the disputes between Mainz and Hildesheim over the monastery in Gandersheim were decided. Humfried made sure that the Archbishop's chair always had to be confirmed by the Pope. So in 1035 he ensured free market access in Magdeburg.
Humfried's predecessor Gero had been in a dispute with the Bishop of Halberstadt over the borders of the two dioceses . These disputes were not over when Humfried took office. It was not until 1040 that Humfried was able to come to an understanding with the Bishop of Halberstadt by ceding 25 parishes to him. He had the high choir erected in the cathedral church and enlarged the Nikolaikirche . He died in 1051 after he had the privileges of the diocese from both Conrad II and Heinrich III. had confirmed. His body was brought to Magdeburg and buried in the cathedral.
