Rhys from Owain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rhys from Owain († 1078 ) was a king of the Welsh principality of Deheubarth .

He was a son of Owain from Edwin and a great-grandson of Einion ap Owain and the last member of the older line of the descendants of Hywel Dda . He was one of the Welsh princes who were defeated around 1070 by a Norman army under William FitzOsbern in Brycheiniog . After the death of his brother Maredudd from Owain he was able to prevail against Bleddyn ap Cynfyn of Gwynedd and in 1072 became King of Deheubarth. With the help of Rhydderch ap Caradog of Rhos, he was able to beat Bleddyn ap Cynfyn again in 1075, who was killed shortly afterwards. Rhydderch himself was also killed in 1076, making Rhys the most powerful prince of South Wales. However, he was defeated by Trahern ap Caradog of Gwynedd at the Battle of Goodwick in 1078 . Rhys had to flee and was killed together with his brother Hywel by Caradog ap Gruffydd von Gwent towards the end of the year . He was succeeded by his second cousin Rhys ap Tewdwr .
