Maredudd from Owain

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maredudd ap Owain († 1072 ) was a king of the Welsh principality of Deheubarth .

Maredudd was a son of Owain from Edwin and a great-grandson of Einion ap Owain from the older line of the descendants of Hywel Dda . When Gruffydd ap Llywelyn was killed in 1063, he seized power over Deheubarth and thus restored the rule of the older line of the descendants of Hywel Ddas. Under his rule, the first conflict between the Welsh and the Norman conquerors in South Wales arose when, around 1070, a Norman army under William FitzOsbern defeated a Welsh army in Brycheiniog in a short and unequal battle. Maredudd had to accept the conquest of the border areas of Gwent . In return, he received lands in England as a fief. Maredudd fell in 1072 fighting Caradog ap Gruffydd of Gwent on the banks of the River Rhymney . He was succeeded by his brother Rhys from Owain .

Maredudd left a son, Gruffydd, and a daughter. Gruffydd lived in exile on his father's English estates. In 1091 a group of nobles in Dyfed tried to have him instead of Rhys ap Tewdwr , the successor of Rhys ap Owains on the throne. However, they were defeated by Rhys ap Tewdwr in a battle at St Dogmaels on the Teifi . Gruffydd was killed in the battle.
