The River Teifi ( Afon Teifi ) is a river in the County of Ceredigion , Wales , which flows into the sea below Cardigan . The catchment area of the river is estimated at 1008 square kilometers. The average annual runoff at Glan Teifi is 31.026 m³ / s. The maximum recorded flow rate (until 1970) was recorded on December 17, 1965 at 269.7 m³ / s. The average rainfall varies from 155 mm per year on the upper reaches of the river to 1176 mm per year on the lower reaches of the river.
geography
The river has its source in Llyn Teifi , one of several lakes that are collectively referred to as Teifi Pools. These are located in the northern area of County Ceredigion . This vast area of Mid-Wales , which is quite sparsely populated, is part of what is sometimes referred to as the Wales Desert . The river passes Strata Florida Abbey and flows through Pontrhydfendigaid before reaching the main section of its valley. Here it flows through one of the great upland moors in Great Britain , Gors Goch Glan Teifi or Tregaron Bog . During the following 50 km meanders of the river in a gentle arc generally to the southwest, passing through the villages and towns Tregaron , Llanddewi Brefi , Cwmann , Lampeter , Llanybydder , Llandysul , Newcastle Emlyn , Cenarth , Llechryd and finally Cardigan. The river is already subject to the tides below Llechryd and reaches Cardigan between the steep banks of the Cilgerran Gorge. Below Cardigan, the river widens to a wide estuary , on the banks of which is the seaside resort Poppit Sands , before emptying into Cardigan Bay .
