Nikolaus Senn

Nikolaus Senn (born October 22, 1926 in Herisau ; † November 2, 2014 in Herrliberg ; legal resident in Wil SG and Herrliberg) was a Swiss bank manager .

Life

Senn grew up in Appenzell . His father Niklaus Senn was a director at the Appenzell-Innerrhodische Kantonalbank and Innerrhodner Landeszeugherr . Senn studied law at the universities of Friborg , Zurich , Lausanne and Bern and graduated with a doctorate in Bern in 1950 . He also embarked on an officer career in the military . After completing practical training in a law firm in St. Gallen and becoming a lawyer, he joined the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBG), one of the two predecessors of today's UBS , as an intern in May 1951 .

From 1954 to 1959 he worked at the secretariat of the Swiss Bankers Association in Basel, and in 1959 he returned to the UBS. On January 1, 1965, he was appointed director and head of the finance secretariat. On July 1, 1966, he was appointed Deputy General Director and became a member of the General Management, responsible for managing investment advice and asset management as well as securities trading as a whole ( stock exchange ).

On January 1, 1968, Senn was appointed General Manager and took over the overall management of the finance department, which he held until 1980. He then headed the General Management and its staff units as President until 1988.

On April 7, 1988, Senn was elected to the Board of Directors by the General Assembly, which appointed him Chairman. He succeeded Robert Holzach . After eight years, Senn retired in 1996. Thereupon he was elected honorary president of the bank on April 16, 1996 by the general assembly. Two years later, the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBG) merged with the Swiss Bank Corporation (SBV) to form today's UBS.

Senn sat on various boards of directors and supervisory boards of international companies, among other things he was on the board of directors of Winterthur Insurance from 1980 to 1995 , president of Richemont from 1988 to 2002 and on the supervisory board of Siemens from 1988 to 1998 .

Senn was closely networked with politics and the military.

Private

Senn played ice hockey at a high level during his student days. He played as a defender for SC Bern for one winter season. In the 1980s, Senn suffered a heart attack in his office at the SBG and had to be hospitalized.

Senn had been married since 1952 and had two daughters and a son. He lived with his wife in Herrliberg since 1963 , where he also died.

He played golf in his spare time and curling in winter . He and his wife also went on boat trips. From 1979 to 2000 Senn was President of the Lenzerheide Golf Club .

After his retirement, Senn was a sought-after discussion partner in the media about UBS.

He had been a member of AKV Kyburger Zürich and AV Berchtoldia Bern , both student associations in the Schw. StV , since his studies .
