Æscwine (Wessex)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Æscwine (also: Aescwine; Escuuine ) († 676 ) was from 674 to 676, king of the Gewissæ , an ethnic group that formed the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex in the late 7th century as "West Saxony" .

Life

Æscwine comes from the Wessex family and was a son of Cenfus . A politically unstable period began after King Cenwalh's death in 672. Æscwine's father, Cenfus, appears to have established himself as an under-king alongside Seaxburg and others. In 674, Cenfus and Seaxburg disappeared from the sources. He was succeeded by Cenfus' son Æscwine, who probably had to share the rule with under kings. In 675 there was the battle of Bedanheafde (not identified) against King Wulfhere of Mercia, the outcome of which has not been recorded. However, Wolfhere died soon after. Æscwine couldn't take advantage of the win. He died in 676 after only two years in government . He was succeeded by Centwine .
