Æthelberht (also: Æthelbert, Æthelbryht, Adelbertus, Ethelbertus, Ethilbercht ; fl. 733/757) was a king of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Sussex in the middle of the 8th century.

Life

The chronology is very uncertain for Sussex because of the weak sources of the 8th century. Æthelberht is only known through three charters , which are the only source of information on his life data. His origin is unknown, but he may have been a son of King Æthelstan .

The exact background of his rule is unclear. He can be considered the successor of the sub-kings Nothhelm and Æthelstan, who are dependent on Wessex . His reign could only be determined by the overlap with the tenure of Bishop Sigefrith von Selsey. Presumably Osmund followed as king in Sussex around 758 .
