Life

Æthelburg was born around 673. She was married to King Ine. Together they ruled the Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of Wessex. She is described by some historians as one of the few women in the Anglo-Saxon region who had the right to lead a military force. In 722 Æthelburg destroyed the fortress Taunton in the absence of her husband Ine , which Ine had built in 710 to confront the rebels Ealdberht .

In the year 726 Ine abdicated, handed over his kingdom to his successor Æthelheard , the brother of thelburg, and went on a pilgrimage with Æthelburg to Rome , where he died. Æthelburg returned to Wessex. She died in 740.

Modern reception

Judy Chicago dedicated an inscription to Æthelburg on the triangular floor tiles of the Heritage Floor of her installation The Dinner Party . The named Æthelburg labeled porcelain tiles are the square of the setting for Theodora assigned.
