Life

No contemporary accounts of Æthelstan's life have come down to us. He is only known for about 60 coins that bear his name.

East Anglia has been ruled by the kings of Mercias since the beginning of the 9th century . Æthelstan had coins minted as early as the early 820s, which indicates an initially unsuccessful attempt to gain power in East Anglia. Probably since 825 Æthelstan led a revolt against Mercia with the support of King Egbert of Wessex . The Mercian king Beornwulf fell in 825 . His successor Ludeca found death in the fighting in 827 and East Anglia regained its independence. Æthelweard succeeded him to the throne around the year 845 .
