Æthelwine (Lindsey)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Æthelwine (also Ediluini ) was the second bishop of Lindsey from 680 to 692 .

Life

Æthelwine came from the nobility of the Angles ("de nobilibus Anglorum"). His parents and year of birth are unknown. His sister Æthelhild was the abbess of a convent in Lincolnshire and his brother Ealdwine was the abbot of Peartaneu (Partney / Lincolnshire). Another brother, Æthelhun, was a monk at Rathmelsigi Monastery in Ireland .

After Æthelwine received a good education in Ireland, he returned to Lindsey. In 679, Æthelred of Mercia conquered the kingdom of Lindsey . Bishop Eadhæd had to leave Lindsey and Æthelwine was his successor around 680. About his tenure as bishop was only passed down that he ruled multo tempore ("long time") and nobilissime ("worthy"). Æthelwine's unknown date of death is mostly believed to be around 692.
