Eadhæd

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Eadhæd (also Eadheath , Eadhaedus , Eadhaed or Eadhed ) was an early medieval bishop of Lindsey from 678 to 679 and bishop of Ripon from 680 .

Life

Eadhæd was a priest when he accompanied King Oswiu Chad to Wessex in 664 , where he was ordained Bishop of York . After the deposition of Bishop Wilfrid of York, his diocese was divided by Archbishop Theodore of Canterbury : Bosa was in 678 in York from Theodore to Bishop of Deira with seat in York, Eata as Bishop of Bernicia with seats in Hagustald ( Hexham ) and Lindisfarne (monastery ) and Eadhæd ordained first bishop of Lindsey . In 679 Æthelred of Mercia conquered the kingdom of Lindsey . Eadhæd had to leave Lindsey and in 680 became the only bishop of Ripon. Presumably the Ripon diocese was created especially for Eadhæd. He signed a charter in 685 with Eadhæd Lindissi episcopus ("Eadhæd, Bishop of Lindsey"). However, the document is considered to be a later copy or a forgery.
