Bosa of York
Saint Bosa (* before 678; † 706 ) was the fourth Bishop of York and officiated from 678 to 706.
Bosa, whose date of birth is unknown, came from Northumbria and received his spiritual training in the monastery of Whitby by the Holy Hilda . He was installed as Bishop of York in 678 when the incumbent Wilfrid refused to agree to the division of his diocese into four smaller bishoprics by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Theodore of Tarsus , who thus counteracted the formation of a northern English counterpower or a second English archbishopric wanted to. Although Wilfrid appealed to Pope Agatho , who agreed with him, his decision was not recognized by the new northern English bishops, so that Wilfrid had to go into exile in Sussex . Bosa, on the other hand, recognized the separation of the dioceses of Hexham and Lindsey and served nine years before Wilfrid reconciled himself with Archbishop Theodor in 686 and was installed as Bishop of York. Therefore, Bosa had to give up his office temporarily, but was able to climb the bishopric again in 691. Wilfrid continued to fight persistently for the York diocese, but was finally satisfied with a synodal decision, which was confirmed by the Pope, after which he remained the diocese of Hexham and the supervision of the monasteries he founded.
Even after Bosa's death in 706, he did not become his successor, but was followed by John von Beverley in office.
Bosa was later canonized. His feast day was March 2nd in the late 8th century, later it was moved to March 9th.
