The Île Sainte-Thérèse is an island in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec . It is located in the Saint Lawrence River east of the Île de Montréal and belongs to the area of the city of Varennes , across from Montreal . The island is 4.8 km long and 1.6 km wide and has an area of 5.4 km². This makes it the fifth largest island in the Hochelaga archipelago .

The island consists of limestone on its west side and slate on its east side . It is covered by a dense, clayey layer of sand, which makes the soil very fertile and suitable for agriculture . Various archaeological finds indicate a settlement by the indigenous people. From 1662 Ignace Boucher was the first European owner of the island. Around 1900 the area of the island was over 600 hectares ; However, it then decreased by around 70 hectares due to erosion and the establishment of the St. Lawrence Seaway . A large part of the island is still used for agriculture today, and there is also a bird sanctuary.

Most of the Île Sainte-Thérèse has been owned by the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Province of Québec since 1995 . Efforts are being made to declare the island a regional park due to its biodiversity and archaeological sites, but this has not yet been done. One of the reasons for this are a few dozen squatters who have illegally built houses and avoid paying taxes, as the island is hardly controlled due to its isolated location and due to disputes over competencies between the ministry and city authorities.
