The Île de Peilz is a small island in Vaud in the upper part of Lake Geneva .
It is located in shallow water in front of the municipalities of Noville and Villeneuve , 500 m from the shore. It has a square shape with brick sides and an area of about 400 m². There is a large plane tree on the island.
The island belongs to the municipalities of Noville and Villeneuve. It takes its name from the municipality of La Tour-de-Peilz . The island used to be just a simple rock sticking out of the water. The inhabitants of Villeneuve had built a larger island on top of it in 1797, the area of which has decreased over time. In 1851 three plane trees were planted on the island, one of which still exists.
The island is mentioned by Lord Byron in the poem The Prisoner of Chillon , which describes François Bonivard's captivity in Chillon Castle :
And then there was a little isle,
Which in my very face did smile,
The only one in view;
A small green isle, it seem'd no more,
Scarce broader than my dungeon floor,
But in it there were three tall trees,
And o'er it blew the mountain breeze,
And by it there were waters flowing,
And on it there were young flowers growing,
of gentle breath and hue.
