A Ile mystérieuse so tentatively and provisionally named for the novel The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne , was created after the storm Klaus in January 2009, a sandbar in March of that year, before the Gironde - estuary in the Atlantic during the Cordouan Lighthouse .

The island, which belongs to the Domaine public maritime and in principle administratively to the municipality of Le Verdon-sur-Mer in the Médoc , was first sighted in March 2009. Storm Xynthia at the end of February 2010 had no lasting effects. The island is growing and reached a size of 4 hectares and a maximum height of 4 to 5 meters by summer 2010. A sparse vegetation and a limited fauna have set in. The previous official non-existence has made both official mapping and a possible under-protection position difficult.
