Îles Sentinelles

The Îles Sentinelles ( French , English Sentinel Islands , each translatable as 'Guardian Islands ') are a group of small rocky islands off the coast of the East Antarctic Adélieland . They are located directly in front of the ice cliffs 3 km east of the Curzon Islands .

The first aerial photographs of the islands were taken during the US operation Highjump (1946–1947). Participants in a French Antarctic expedition conducted from 1949 to 1951 under the direction of André-Franck Liotard (1905–1982) mapped and named them. The fact that these islands are the most easterly known geographical object on the coast of Adélieland gives them their name.
