The public lavatory on Totendamm in Schwerin , with the side stairs and walls on Goethestrasse , at the corner of Geschwister-Scholl-Strasse, was built in 1927 according to the plans of the architect and town planning officer Andreas Hamann (1884–1955) in the brick expressionist style.

The public lavatory has been a listed building since the 1990s . It was temporarily closed. In 2010 a redevelopment was decided to “improve the regional economic structure”. The extensive renovation of the former facility began in early 2011; this was converted into a modern, handicapped accessible public toilet . The renovation work was completed at the end of 2011.

Around 75 percent of the construction costs were provided by the State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania , the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union and funded by the European Regional Development Fund.
