Ördögigafa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ördögigafa is the name of a beech ( Fagus sylvatica ) in a forest about five kilometers (as the crow flies) south of the city of Sümeg , on the western border of Veszprém County in Hungary .

This tree is a natural monument and is popularly called the "devil's broom" because of its peculiar shape.

The tree is about a hundred years old, its trunk is almost three meters in diameter and 31 meters in height. It leans slightly to the east, and its shape is particularly curious and striking. The tree appears to have grown together from several neighboring shoots (probably due to stick eruption ), so it forms an opening close to the ground. But already at a height of three meters the tree branches into three main trunks with numerous branches.

Not far south of the tree, the “source of Sarvaly ” marks a medieval village .
