The Austrian heraldry joins the Central European heraldry . The Habsburg era was particularly influential for them. Many city coats of arms can be recognized by the Austrian shield or the imperial eagle, in addition to the other motifs. Country and place-specific markings stand next to the coat of arms figure . The period of the dual monarchy shows a clear difference to Hungary . This Hungarian heraldry had a strong influence from the Turkish wars, but was not passed on to Austria .

After 1918 and again after 1945, many coats of arms were newly created or adapted to modern times. The cause was the collapse of the dual monarchy and the political orientation of the resulting new states ( Czechoslovakia , Hungary , Yugoslavia ).
