The main concern of the youth and nature conservation organization Österreichischne Naturschutzjugend , founded in 1952 , is the conscious introduction of young people to a sound understanding of nature.

Around 10,000 members belong to the non-denominational and party-independent youth and nature conservation organization throughout Austria .

The activities of the önj are guided by the idea of nature and ecology. Discover nature - experience - feel - observe - learn to love - understand - explore. In this way, children, young people and adults can be enthusiastic about actively working for endangered animal and plant species and their habitats.

In addition to many projects in the field of nature and ecology , an important focus of the önj is the creation of eco-islands. Endangered and ecologically valuable habitats are acquired and looked after. Thus, the Austrian nature youth was no less than 1 million sqm threatened natural landscapes (mainly wet meadows, in recent decades floodplains , Moore ) buy and thus save.

The önj is organized in various national, regional and local groups. It is networked with other youth environmental organizations across Europe through Youth and Environment Europe (YEE) .
