Austrian system for public libraries

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian system for public libraries (ÖSÖB) is the most widespread system in Austria's public libraries . It is used for the systematic listing and cataloging of non-fiction, fiction as well as children's and youth literature. It originally goes back to a structure used in German open access libraries of the New Book Hall Movement at the beginning of the 20th century . In 1949 it was recommended in a modified form for use in Austria by the Association of Austrian People's Libraries - the forerunner of the Austrian Library Association (BVÖ) - and is now used by more than 80% of public libraries in Austria. The ÖSÖB is therefore even more dominant in Austria than the General Systematics for Public Libraries (ASB) in Germany . In the largest public library in Austria, the main library of the Vienna Libraries , a variant of the ÖSÖB is used.

2001–2004 the ÖSÖB was completely revised and updated. The 2nd edition of the ÖSÖB, also revised and expanded to include the key words for children's and youth media, appeared in 2 volumes in 2012. ÖSÖB user libraries are also involved in the maintenance and further development. The ÖSÖB is edited by the Austrian Library Association .

Characterization of the ÖSÖB

When ÖSÖB is a mono-hierarchically structured system whose notations are formed from letters. The top hierarchy level comprises 15 groups, which are further subdivided according to factual, formal and reader psychological criteria up to a level of structure of 5 letters.

The verbal definition of the individual classes is done through the systematic name (it is used for a short, concise characterization of the systematic group and is required for the shelf labeling, the bookend signs and the designation in the OPAC), through explanations (they contain additional, freely formulated information on the scope of the systematic group that the classification name itself can not be accommodated), by references (they have similar content out in the Scheme are but arranged at another place, and thus - by the strict mono hierarchical ordering principle through - cross compounds of interwoven knowledge areas visible) as well as keywords or keyword chains (they enable selective access to a topic).

A particular advantage of the ÖSÖB is its free availability on the Internet. In addition to this online version, user advice is also available on the website of the Austrian Library Association (BVÖ), which offers extensive general information on the system and serves as a contact point for user libraries.
