Austrian Institute for Spatial Planning

The Austrian Institute for Spatial Planning (ÖIR) is a non-profit association based in Vienna that deals with the topics of spatial planning and regional development. As a community, the institute tries to make the public aware of the spatial dimension in politics and society through planning, research and advice and to find innovative solutions to problems. It was founded in 1957.

The employees work in research, planning and policy advice and in the management of planning processes. The institute's field of work is in Austria and the neighboring countries and includes the European dimension of spatial development and spatial research. The tasks of the ÖIR include urban and regional development, transport planning, spatial development in Europe, EU program planning, assessment of plans and projects (RVP, SUP , EIA , evaluations), regional and environmental economics or the design and management of planning processes.

The majority of the currently approx. 20 employees are full members of the ÖIR, from whose ranks the board is chosen.
