The eastern monkey bearded monkey ( Allochrocebus lhoesti , syn .: Cercopithecus lhoesti ) is a species of primate from the tribe of the monkeys (Cercopithecini) within the family of the vervet monkeys (Cercopithecidae).
features
The fur of this species is colored black-gray, the most striking feature is the eponymous white facial hair. The face is dark, the eyes colored orange. They have a brownish coat of paint on their back. The animals reach a head body length of 45 to 60 centimeters, a tail length of up to 75 centimeters and an average weight of 7.5 kilograms for males and 4.3 kilograms for females.
distribution and habitat
Eastern full-bearded monkeys live in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo , Uganda , Rwanda and Burundi . Their habitat is forests, both higher dry mountain forests and humid rainforests.
Way of life
These animals live mainly on the ground, they are diurnal. Like all monkeys, they live in groups. The group size is 9 to 25 animals, they consist of (mostly) a male, several females and their young animals. Eastern full-bearded monkeys feed on fruits, leaves, seeds, and insects.
The threats to these primates include hunting, the destruction of their habitat through forest clearing, but also armed conflicts in their area of distribution. The IUCN lists the species as low endangered.
Systematics
The closest relatives of the eastern full-bearded monkey are the western full-bearded monkey and the suntail monkey . Together they form the genus Allochrocebus within the tribe of the vervet monkeys (Cercopithecini).
