The western full-bearded monkey or Prussian monkey ( Allochrocebus preussi , syn .: Cercopithecus preussi ) is a primate species from the tribe of monkeys (Cercopithecini) within the family of vervet monkeys (Cercopithecidae). It is considered a close relative of the eastern full-bearded monkey ( A. lhoesti ), as a subspecies it is sometimes considered. The German zoologist Paul Matschie named the species in 1898 in honor of the botanist Paul Preuss , who, among other things, researched the flora of the then German colony of Cameroon.
features
The fur of the western full-bearded monkey is colored dark gray, the striking characteristic is the white hair, reminiscent of a beard, in the cheek area. The face is black and the back area of the back is reddish brown in color. With a weight of up to 10 kilograms, they are among the larger species of monkey.
distribution and habitat
Western monkeys are only found in southwestern Cameroon near the Cameroon Mountain , the Bamenda Highlands , including the Obudu Plateau , and on the island of Bioko , which belongs to Equatorial Guinea . According to the distribution area, two subspecies are distinguished: A. p. preussi on the mainland and A. p. insularis on Bioko. Their habitat are mountainous forests up to 2500 meters above sea level.
Way of life
These animals are diurnal and, in contrast to most other vervet monkeys, are pronounced ground dwellers. They live in groups of an average of 17 animals. These consist of a male, several females and the associated young animals. The diet of these animals consists of fruits, insects and leaves.
Little is known about reproduction, but it should be the same as that of other monkeys. On average every three years, the female usually gives birth to a single young after a gestation period of around five to six months. This becomes sexually mature at around four years of age. The life expectancy of the animals can be over 30 years.
threat
Due to the destruction of their habitat and hunting, the western monkey is one of the endangered species. The IUCN lists them as endangered .
