Ústav pamäti národa (abbreviated ÚPN) is a Slovak public-law institution that collects information relating to the time of the Slovak state (1939 to 1945) as well as the communist dictatorship (1948 to 1989).

History and activity

The name of the institute is occasionally also translated alternatively: instead of the institute for the memory of the nation, with “remembrance” or “commemoration”; the term "memory" comes closest to the founders' intent and linguistic usage.

From 1999 a department of the Slovak Ministry of Justice dealt with the collection of documents from the period 1948 to 1989 from the area of ​​state reprimanding dissident currents. The institute itself, which is located in Bratislava , was then established in 2002 with Act 553/2002 Zz, which largely regulates the institute's tasks.

The institute is to make documents about the period from 1939 to 1989 available to the public, including

  • Activity of the security organs and other state instruments of repression from this time
  • Education about the suppression
  • Documents on the tracking of individuals and groups

These documents are also provided to the people for the purpose of enforcing their claims for redress and they are assisted in court proceedings. In addition, the institute has extensive journalistic activity, especially the publication of the journal Časopis Pamäť národa .
