The Convention on the Reduction of Statelessness contains provisions aimed at preventing statelessness . In particular, according to Article 9, political, racist, ethnic and religious expatriations are forbidden and expatriations through territorial changes should be avoided.

The Convention was adopted on August 30, 1961 at the UN headquarters in New York City and entered into force on December 13, 1975. It regulates the granting of nationality and the prohibition of its deprivation in cases in which the affected would otherwise become stateless. By applying the safeguard clauses of this Convention whenever a person is otherwise at risk of statelessness, they can avoid new cases of statelessness.

Purpose of the contract

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) also has the mandate to work for the protection of stateless persons and to reduce statelessness worldwide and currently cares for around 3.7 million stateless persons.
