Overkilling

Killing of the left foot in a dog with degenerative myelopathy

A pathological flexion of the toe joints in animals is called overkilling . Characterized the foot at the toe and top goers placed with the back of the foot.

Paralysis and disorders of proprioception are the main causes of the killing . It is a typical symptom of radial paralysis on the forelimbs , as the radial nerve innervates the extensor muscles of the tarsus and the toes . Because of the now predominant tone of the flexor muscles, overkilling occurs. In the hind limb, damage to the common peroneal nerve , which innervates the flexors of the ankle and the toe extensors, leads to overkilling.

The corrective response is a neurological test in which the limbs are artificially raised to the knees.
