Overload (chess)
In chess , one speaks of overload when a piece cannot deal with two covering tasks at the same time. This often results in combination motifs .

In Diagram 1 , the white pawn on g2 covers the knight on f3 and the pawn on h3 .
After 1.… Bxh3 Black gets back the sacrificed piece on 2. gxh3 with Qxf3 . The white pawn was overloaded.

In this position from a game Krasenkow - Karpow Karpow moved 29… Re1! .
The white rook on f1 now has to protect the pawn on f3 (there is a threat of Qxf3 # ), but at the same time shield the king from the black rook on e1 . The white tower is hopelessly overwhelmed with this double task. Logically, Krasenkow gave up the game at this point.
