Sink with overflow hole (marked in red)

Overflow holes are holes in bathtubs , showers , washbasins and sinks that channel excess water into the sewage system and thereby prevent the tub or basin from accidentally overflowing.

They usually have a diameter of 2 to 3 cm, are round or oblong oval. Overflow holes in kitchen sinks are officially standardized in Germany according to DIN EN 695.
