life and work

Ümit Ünal grew up in difficult, rather poor circumstances in Istanbul as the son of an alcohol-loving father and an Armenian-Christian mother. At the age of eight he was already working in his father's tailoring studio, two years later in a textile factory that produced for a German company, where he had to check buttons and zippers. In 1987, Ünal tried to escape the rather hated activity in that branch of industry by studying archeology , which he graduated with a diploma in 1989 .

He then moved back into the family business, which was followed by further studies in textile design at Marmara University in Istanbul. He finished his studies in 1993 and in the same year was awarded several national prizes for his designs. Numerous fashion shows followed, which have made him one of the most famous fashion designers in his country today, who is also an internationally sought-after and welcomed artist. He currently works for the Turkish fashion label "Abbate".
