Ürziger sundial

The Ürziger sundial is located on river kilometer 119 of the Moselle at the exit of Ürzig in a bulging slope.

The Ürziger sundial is one of the oldest sundials on the Moselle with a Roman dial. It is a vertical sundial with a flat dial and a pole rod that is positioned parallel to the earth's axis. The Ürziger sundial faces south and is located in close proximity to the B 53 downstream of the Moselle at the exit of Ürzig. It shows the true Ürziger local time (WOZ), which is approx. 32 minutes behind in relation to Central European Time (CET).

At the foot of the rock on the left is a niche with the small wooden figure of the Madonna and Child, destroyed by the weather.

A rock face that shoots down suddenly interrupts the Ürziger vineyard area. In the Middle Ages there were three castles in Ürzig. Only one of them is still recognizable as a ruin. The sundial is located on the remains of a former watchtower. Right from the start, the watchtower offered a suitable location, because its façade is exactly south-facing and is also a prominent point in the area. Compared to the other large clocks, the Ürziger seems to have been constructed geometrically (due to its accuracy).

In the middle of the dial there is a niche in which the figure of Kuno I. von Pfullingen is placed.

Behind the sundial are two living rooms one above the other, eight to ten square meters in size by being driven into the rock; the upper one was only illuminated from the east through a slit window. A third floor with around three square meters of usable space has been preserved with the remains of a window reveal.

Until the amendment of the Wine Act in 1971 there was the location name "Ürziger Sundial".

The Ürziger sundial is part of the "Erdener Prälat / Treppchen & Ürziger Sundial" luminous dots of the biological diversity in the Moselle wine-growing region .
