Þingeyrakirkja

The Þingeyrakirkja (Isl. Also Þingeyrarklausturskirkja ; Eng. "Church of Þingeyrar ") is an Evangelical Lutheran church near the Hóp lagoon in the Norðurland vestra region in the north of Iceland .

The Hóp lagoon is separated from the Húnaflói bay by a headland called Þingeyrarsandur . The church is located on this headland, which belongs to the municipality of Húnavatn .

history

In 1133 the first monastery in the country was founded here. The current church was built between 1864 and 1877.

Despite its inconspicuous exterior, the 14.4 m long and 8.23 ​​m wide church contains numerous art treasures, including an altar from the 15th century.
