ČSA flight 511 ( OK511 for short ) was a scheduled flight of the Czechoslovak airline ČSA from Prague to Bamako with several stopovers, which ended on July 12, 1961 near Casablanca with the crash of the deployed Ilyushin Il-18 .
Airplane and pilots
The Ilyushin Il-18W with the registration OK-PAF was handed over to the Československé Aerolinie , ČSA for short , on April 22, 1961 and was almost three months old at the time of the accident. The captain of flight OK511 had a total of 10,560 hours and the copilot 6,301 hours of flight experience. The two pilots were familiar with the IL-18 to different degrees. While the copilot only had 223 hours of flight experience, the master had 826 hours of flight experience on this type.
course
After a stopover, Flight 511 took off on July 11 at 8:43 p.m. from Zurich Airport with destination Rabat . At 1:00 a.m., the pilots contacted the control tower at Rabat Airport to find out about the weather conditions. Because of the poor visibility of only 10 meters, the pilots decided to land at Casablanca-Anfa Airport. At around 1:06 a.m. the Il-18 began to descend to the airport and four minutes later the aircraft was on the approach for landing. The Il-18 flew over the airport at 1:13 a.m. and three minutes later the pilots reported an altitude of 400 meters (1,300 feet) and a cloud ceiling of 150 meters (500 feet). Due to the deteriorating visibility, the pilots asked permission to land at Nouasseur Air Base (now Casablanca Airport ).
While the air traffic controller at Nouasseur Air Base asked for permission to land for flight 511 , the Il-18 collided with the ground at around 1:25 a.m. and went up in flames. All 72 people on board died.
Cause of accident
The most likely cause of the crash is that the pilots lost altitude too quickly while attempting to descend below the cloud cover, preventing them from being able to pull the plane up in time. A technical or mechanical defect could not be ruled out.
