The ČSD class 486.0 was an express locomotive for heavy trains (up to 500 t) in the hill country of the former Czechoslovak state railway ČSD. It was developed from the ČSD series 387.0 and was specially designed for use on the former Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn . They were nicknamed Anton by the company service .
The axle load of the machines could be set to either 16 or 17.5 t and the steam pressure could also be set to 14 or 16 bar. It had a bar frame with 90 mm thick side members. The 486.0 series was a successful construction that was very popular with the staff and the basis for further constructions at the ČSD ( 498.0 ). Simultaneously with it, ČKD Prague developed a comparative type with the 1'D2 'axle arrangement ( ČSD series 486.1 ). While this wheel arrangement prevailed at the Romanian Railways CFR and in Austria , the Czechoslovak Railways preferred mountain locomotives.
For many years, the locomotives determined the express train service on their traditional routes. When the Kaschau-Oderberger Bahn was electrified from the end of the 1950s, the locomotives were relocated to Bratislava , where they provided passenger transport in the Waagtal . During their use, the locomotives experienced several improvements that increased their performance even further ( Kylchap double blowpipe , stoker fire). The retirement took place in the years up to 1971.
The locomotive 486.007 was restored to its original condition in the Vrútky depot in the years 1996–1998 , given the green paint (which earned it the nickname “Green Anton”) and refurbished to work.
