The ČSD series M 498.0 was a diesel multiple unit of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) for national and international express and express train traffic. To reduce air resistance, it was equipped with a rounded forehead and aprons in the underfloor area. Like its predecessor, the M 495.0 series , it was equipped with a diesel-mechanical drive system and a five-speed gearbox.

history

The railcars were developed and built between 1961 and 1964 by Ganz-MÁVAG in Budapest . A total of ten multiple units and two reserve machine cars were procured.

In 1965, a new numbering scheme was introduced at ČSD. The motor vehicles were then given the designation M 298.0001 - 0020.

After delivery, the vehicles initially ran on international express and express train services. The Vindobona and the Hungaria Express were deployed . Later they were used in domestic traffic from the Prague- Liben depot , especially on the routes to Karlovy Vary , Liberec and Horní Dvořiště . With the appearance of the new M 296.1 series , they were replaced by these because the M 296.1 motor vehicles could be used more freely.

From 1976 the railcars were taken out of service, in 1982 the last train was deleted from the inventory. A class M 298.0 railcar has not survived in the former Czechoslovakia . With this series, the procurement of railcars from Hungary by Czechoslovakia was ended.

technical features

A multiple unit consisted of two machine cars, a seating car and a dining car. The vehicles were connected to one another with screw couplings. There was a Scharfenberg coupling at the front . Two multiple units could be operated together from one driver's cab via a multiple control.

The technical structure of the vehicles is based on the Ganz- Jendrassik system. However, the motor bogie has one axle less. This increased the axle load of the motor vehicle to 18 t, eliminating the tendency to derail in the previous model. In contrast to many diesel-mechanical railcars with the Mylius gearbox , with the Ganz type the railcar is switched like a truck. Operation and maintenance was therefore not that easy and required precise instruction. In contrast to the previous design, where all the seats were in one large compartment, the seats were again in compartments.
