The Ōtani University ( Japanese 大谷 大学 , Ōtani daigaku ) is a Japanese private university, which is supported by the Buddhist Jōdo Shinshū sect Ōtani-ha . The main campus is located in Koyama-Kamifusachō, Kita-ku , Kyōto in Kyōto Prefecture .

history

In 1665 the school Gakuryō ( 学 寮 , literally: "student dormitory") was founded by the temple Higashi Hongan-ji . This was named in 1755 in Takakura-Gakuryō , in 1873 in Kanrenjō ( 貫 練 d, German about "Institute for Education"), and in 1882 in Shinshū College ( 真宗 大学 寮 , Shinshū daigakuryō ). The college became Shinshū Daigaku ( 真宗 大学 , German "Shinshū University"; not today's Shinshū University ).

The school moved to Tokyo in 1901 and returned to Kyoto in 1911. In the same year it was renamed Shinshu-Ōtani College. Today's main campus was opened in 1913. In 1923 the school received university status and was renamed to its current name.
