Ōtawara (clan)
The Ōtawara ( Japanese 大田 原 氏 , Ōtawara-shi ) were a family of the Japanese sword nobility ( Buke ), derived from Emperor Heizei . The Ōtawara were initially vassals of the Nasu until they became independent in connection with the civil war in the 16th century and built a castle in Ōtawara.
Genealogy (selection)
- Sukekiyo (清 資) built the castle in 1543 or 1545.
- Harukiyo (晴 清; 1567-1631), a grandson of Sukekiyos, took part in Toyotomi Hideyoshi's campaign against Odawara Castle and was raised to daimyo with an income of 12,000 koku . Around 1600 Tokugawa Ieyasu ordered him to repair the castle. Harukiyo's descendants resided in Ōtawara until the Meiji Restoration in 1868 as Tozama daimyo .
After 1868 the Ōtawara received the rank of vice count.
