Cesare Paoli (born November 10, 1840 in Florence , † January 20, 1902 ) was an Italian historian and paleographer .

Life

Cesare Paoli was the eldest of nine children of the Italian Senator Baldassare Paoli and Antonietta Bruchi. He studied in Florence and joined the archive service in 1859. In 1865 he became archivist in Siena , in 1871 in Florence and in 1874 first professor of Latin palaeography and diplomacy at the Istituto di Studi Superiori there , where he dealt with the interpretation of manuscripts.

In addition to numerous treatises on the history of Florence and on individual questions from his field of study, he wrote, in particular, Programma scolastico di paleografia latina e di diplomatica (1st edition 1883; 2nd increased edition, 3 vols., Florence 1888-98; German by Karl Lohmeyer , Innsbruck 1889-99). Together with Girolamo Vitelli he published the Collezione fiorentina di facsimili paleografici greci e latini from 1884 to 1898 . From 1887 he edited the Archivio Storico Italiano , for which he contributed many articles. In its 29th volume from 1902 there is a bibliography of Paolis.
