Ōtomo no tabito

Ōtomo no Tabito ( Japanese 大 伴 旅人 ; * 665 ; † 731 ) was an ancient Japanese poet. He is better known as the son of Ōtomo no Yasumaro and the father of Ōtomo no Yakamochi . Both were co-editors of one of the most important anthologies in Japanese literary history, the Manyōshū .

Life

He received the position of General on the Left and Chūnagon and was sent to Kyūshū in 720 to put down a Hayato uprising. He took up a new post as head of Dazaifu in 728 . During this time he was in contact with Yamamnoue no Okura , a poet and governor of Chikuzen Province . Shortly afterwards, his wife who had accompanied him died. His memories when he circled Cape Minume two years later at the age of 66 on his return to the capital are preserved in poem 3–450 of this work. His feelings on returning to the now empty house in poems 3–451 and 3–452. A little later he dies.

Manyōshū's poem 3–344 is a song of praise from Ōtomo to sake :

「あ な 醜 賢 し ら を す と 酒 飲 ま ぬ 人 を よ く 見 れ れ 猿 に に か も 似 る」

「Ana miniku sakashira o su to sake nomanu hito o yoku mireba saru ni ka mo niru」

“Oh how ugly. Take a good look at him, the man who is arrogant and wouldn't drink sake, and he looks just like a monkey. "

Over 80 poems by Ōtomo no Tabito have been preserved through the Manyōshū. Another Chinese poem is preserved in the Kaifūsō .
