Transport and infrastructure

The city is of great importance as a border crossing to Poland because the only rail link between the two countries ( Vilnius - Kaunas - Šeštokai - Warsaw ) runs through it. Due to the different track widths (Poland: 1435 mm , Lithuania: 1520 mm ), the rail vehicles have to be re-gauged here or passengers have to change trains. Buses have been operating since the Warsaw – Vilnius night train was discontinued (2005). There is only little rail passenger traffic, in the 2012/13 timetable with one train per day.
