Štvanice (German Hetzinsel ) is an island in the urban area of Prague in the Vltava , north of the Charles Bridge . The island lies between the Holešovice district , to which it also belongs, and the Karlín district .

Surname

Štvanice means chase . The name can be traced back to the hunts carried out here in the 17th century.

History, development and use

The island of Štvanice was formed together with the area around Prague and was originally formed by the Vltava.

On the western tip of the island, a small hydropower plant was built in 1913/14, the Štvanice hydropower plant . It was completely renovated from 1984 to 1987, including the weir.

The island has been used as a recreational area by the Prague population for centuries . A tram stop was built in 2015 and put into operation on March 25, 2017 to improve the connection to local public transport .

An ice rink was built in 1930, but it was demolished in 2011. The tennis stadium of the I. ČLTK Praha (1st Český lawn-tenisový klub, founded in 1893) was built between the two bridges Hlávkův most and Negrelli Viaduct crossing the island . The tennis club has been operating on the island since 1901. There has also been a bike park and a skate park there since the mid-1990s . In 2002 the island was badly affected by the floods .
