Sulinkatte

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sulinkatte is a Hittite god of Hattic origin and name.

His Hattic name means “King of the šuli ”, whereby the otherwise unknown word is translated questioningly with “sword”, since the god was equated with DINGIR U.GUR , whose emblem is the sword. The equation with ZA.BA 4 .BA 4 shows that he is a god of war. In a ritual for the construction of the royal palace, he was used as gatekeeper, which is why he also received sacrifices at city gates.

In his cult city Tamarmara a winter and a spring festival were celebrated annually. His cult image was a silver man standing on a wooden lion. He holds a dagger in one hand and a human head in the other.

In Nerik , Šulinkatte was the partner of the sun goddess of the earth and father of the weather god of Nerik , who was therefore also called Šulinkattainu "little Šulinkatte". He is one of the deities worshiped in Zalpa and Karaḫna .

He also had a cult place on the Büyükkale in Ḫattuša . In Ḫattuša he was also venerated at the AN.TAḪ.ŠUM festival .
