Zababa

Zababa (written as: d ZA.BA 4 .BA 4 ) was a Mesopotamian god of war and city god of Kiš , who was also worshiped by the Hittites .

Zababa is one of the war deities worshiped by the Hittites . In the Ḫaḫḫima myth, the weather god Zababa sends off to find the sun deity, but the demon Ḫaḫḫima freezes the Zababa. He is also mentioned among the oath gods in the Šuppiluliuma-Šattiwazza treaty. Lion vessels were used in his cult .

There are several possibilities of which Hittite deity is hidden behind the Akkadogram ZABABA. On the one hand the Hattic gods of war Wurunkatte and Šulinkatte , on the other hand the Luwian epidemic and war god Iyarri are conceivable .

The most famous personality with the god Zababa as the theophoric name element is the Babylonian king Zababa-šuma-iddina . Otherwise Ur-Zababa is also known, the Sumerian king whose cupbearer Sargon of Akkad was before he became king himself.
