ʻAta (also: Ataa ) is a small island in the north of Tongatapu in the Pacific . Politically, it belongs to the Kingdom of Tonga .
geography
The motu lies to the north of the eastern extension of the reef crest, along with the northern dew . The closest islands to the south are Nuku and ʻEua Iki in their own small reef.
The island has been used as a prison since 2001. In 2002 there were seven juvenile offenders living on the island who had to make a living from farming.
climate
The climate is tropical hot, but is tempered by constantly blowing winds. Like the other islands in the Niua Group, Tafahi is occasionally hit by cyclones .
